There’s something special about slowing down long enough to notice the little wonders around us. Today’s beautiful weather in the Gap felt like the perfect invitation to step away from work for a bit, grab my camera, and enjoy one of my favorite pastimes- wildlife watching.

One of the stars of the day was a vibrant Northern Cardinal perched perfectly on a tree branch. Cardinals are always a treat to see, their brilliant red color standing out so boldly against the soft greens and browns of nature. But what made this moment even better was the bird’s expression.
Instead of quickly flying away like many birds do, this little fellow paused and seemed to study me just as carefully as I was studying him through my lens. Head slightly tilted, eyes focused… almost like he was trying to figure out what I was doing there.
Moments like that make me smile. We spend so much time bird watching, but I often wonder—what do the birds think when they’re human watching? Do they see us as curious creatures wandering through their world with odd gadgets and lenses? Do they wonder why we stand so still, quietly hoping they’ll stay just a few seconds longer?
That’s the fun of bird photography. You never quite know what moment you’ll capture, but sometimes you’re lucky enough to freeze a tiny exchange between two curious species sharing the same peaceful day.
Today, it felt like the cardinal and I were both enjoying the show. And for a few quiet seconds in Buffalo Gap, we were simply watching each other.
